This page has resources that apply to reading instruction. I included the Oregon Department of Education literacy standards (both the Common Core State Standards as well as the Standards by Design) for quick reference. Under the pedagogy heading are resources that I like to keep handy because they are either ideas I would like to use in my classroom, inspiring resources, or people I can learn from. Under the curricula heading are resources I have either created or found that I would like to use one day in my own classroom.

Because of Winn-Dixie Novel Unit
This was the work sample I created and completed in a 4th grade class. It was a 3-week novel unit, based on Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo, with the foci of summarizing and visualizing.. Intro and Resources includes goals and standards, lesson outlines, a unit calendar, basic bulletin board materials, chapter summaries, and a vocabulary list with definitions. Any activities or resources for the lessons are attached directly after each lesson. The pre-assessment includes an anticipatory set that can be given before the start of the unit. The post-assessment includes assessments for both average- and high-performing students. Both pre- and post-assessments include rubrics.
As a supplement to the unit, or to at least inspire more ideas, next time I would utilize this website that I found (unfortunately, after I completed my work sample). It is an interactive site that has a scrapbook of characters, Kate DiCamillo's editing process and drafts of this story, and many more useful and interesting activities based around the story. Here is the site: Because of Winn Dixie Interactive.
Winter is Coming! This is a text I created through a website called Storyjumper. You can create a book online for free, and even have the option of purchasing a soft- or hard-cover version. There are video tutorials to help first-time authors, and you are also able to read other user-created books.

There are several activities that can be used for independent practice, resources that can be used to guide instruction, or materials that can be used to help review concepts. Creative Book Reports I have always sworn that I would never have my students write traditional book reports. I know that I hated them in school, and they are often so boring and meaningless. This site has many different ideas for making book reports more engaging. Mrs. Warner's 4th Grade Classroom This class website is a fantastic resource for many subjects, but I particularly like her reading section. She has many different useful websites, as well as posters and videos about different reading concepts. Into the Book This website has both student and teacher resources. I downloaded these posters for free from teacherspayteachers, and like the idea of having different posters in my classroom to represent the different genres of texts. These could be utilized in all grades, as some of these genres are introduced early on in the primary grades.
Reading Olympics
Clicking on the picture will take you to a blog that I found with an idea that I would like to include in my own classroom. It would work best for intermediate grades. This year-round reading idea is called Reading Olympics. Basically, the students have a goal of reading a certain number of books throughout the year. For each book, they are to complete a project from the brochure. There are a list of projects that students can choose from, but change depending on what medal the student is working for. They need to complete a bronze, silver, and gold medal before the end of the year. More information about the idea can be found on this blog. Some examples of students' work can be found here.
